Kedah is in the northwest corner of the
Peninsular Malaysia, and is bounded by Perlis on the north, by the Straits of
Malacca on the west, and by Penang and Perak in the south. Malaysia's current
Prime Minister “Dr. Mahathir" was born in Kedah. It is a fairly small
state. Its population is about one million primarily Malay, though significant
Chinese and Indian minorities can be seen. It is known as the “Rice Bowl of
Malaysia” where its rice plains together with Perlis produce more than half of
the country’s home grown rice supply.
Kedah have 12 District which is Baling,
Bandar Baru, Kota Setar, Kuala Muda, Kubang Pasu, Kulim, Padang Terap, Pendang,
Langkawi, Sik, Yan, Pokok Sena while Its state capital is Alor Setar. Islands
off Kedah's coasts are the 104 islands of Langkawi (see the special site of
Langkawi). Kedah highest peak is the Gunung Jerai, 1200 meters above sea level.
Getting to Kedah is fairly easy. The state
offers an international airport at Langkawi and a domestic airport at Alor
Setar. You could also travel from Langkawi to the mainland and vice versa
through its boats services. While on land, you could travel here through buses,
private cars or trains. Land options are also speedy and convenient.
